Classes

Ready, Set, Sign Up!

Get ready for my Knit For Fun Retreat, which will return to the award-winning Harraseeket Inn located in downtown Freeport, Maine from May 2 to May 5, 2019.

Registration opens at 1:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on July 23. That’s today!

The retreat begins Thursday afternoon with check-in (nametag, room assignment, and a swag bag filled with fun surprises), followed by opening-night festivities.

Classes will be held in three-hour sessions in the mornings and afternoons of Friday and Saturday and will be limited to 24 students each. Your package will include three classes—one with each instructor. You’ll also get one free three-hour period for relaxing, exploring, shopping, or just having fun. For those of you who are “class junkies,” there may be an option to purchase an extra class in lieu of the free period, provided space is available.

An optional full-day (six-hour) intensive class will also be available from each instructor before official check-in on the first day of the retreat.

A marketplace will be open at least one evening of the retreat where you’ll find yarn and other knitting “necessities.”

Lodging, meals (including vegetarian and gluten-free options), beverages, and snacks will be provided throughout the retreat. In other words, you’ll be fully taken care of.

The instructors for this retreat include (from left to right)  Kate Atherley, Isabell Kraemer, and Mary Jane Mucklestone .

Kate will teach:

Introduction to Garment Alterations—Make it Your Own: Participate in a detailed discussion of garment fit and how to adjust that fit. This is not a class on how to custom-fit a given pattern; rather, it’s a discussion of how to choose the right garment to simplify the alterations, how to identify the alterations required, and how to approach the pattern adjustments.

Soxpertise—Improve Your Sock Knitting: In this class, you’ll explore a wide range of sock topics, including fit, reinforcement, different constructions and different ways to work them, and yarn choice. You’ll also learn Kate’s fail-proof method for picking up gusset stitches to prevent holes from forming in top-down heel flap socks.

Fearless Finishing—A Perfect Ending: Let Kate guide you through the key finishing skills, including seaming, blocking, weaving in ends, working the Kitchener stitch, and picking up stitches. Through hands-on practice, you’ll leave confident in finishing your next project. If you suffer from “finishing-itis”, this class is for you!

Smart Strategies for Garment Knitting—Make the Most of Your Knitting Time: This full-day class takes a deep dive into garment knitting, beginning with how to choose a style that suits your body type and how to choose the most flattering size. You’ll also learn how to choose appropriate yarn and how to get gauge, and you’ll leave prepared to tweak the fit with your own alterations and adjustments.

Isabell will teach:

Short-Rows—When and Why: Short-rows have become a shaping staple for many knitwear designers. In this class, you’ll learn several different techniques for using short-rows and where to use them. You’ll learn how to add shaping to a neckline worked in the round and how to shape shoulders, bust darts, and hem lines. Techniques will be illustrated through a variety of Isabell’s designs that use this versatile technique.

Seamless Set-In Sleeves—Look Ma, No Seams!: Ever wanted to get the tailored look of a classic set-in sleeve garment without sewing? This workshop will guide you through the techniques needed to work a set-in sleeve seamlessly from the top down. You may never knit a sleeve from the bottom up again!

Shawl Shapes—So Many Choices: Shawls are knitted in a wide range of shapes. This class will help you understand how the shapes are created by increases or decreases to form triangular (both symmetric and asymmetric), circular, semi-circular, and square shawls. You’ll learn different ways to increase, how to add color and texture, and how to combine different yarn weights.

Top-Down Sweater Design—Make it Great from the Top: Geared toward the adventurous knitter, this full-day class will lead you in designing your own top-down sweater. We’ll begin with a brief overview of different top-down constructions and how to choose the one that best suits your design ideas. We’ll work through all the steps necessary to bring your ideas to life, from taking measurements and adding ease to the effect of stitch patterns.

Mary Jane will teach:

Scandinavian Colorwork—Examine a Tradition: Through knitting a headband or hat, explore color choices and the classic motifs used in Scandinavian stranded knitting. Learn techniques for tacking down extra-long floats, how to Norwegian purl, and a nifty way to execute garter stitch in the round. Along the way, you’ll explore ideas for combining motifs and adding colorwork to liven up any project.

Two-Color Knitting—Let’s Begin: Through knitting a headband or hat, learn the basics of two-color knitting, including several methods to hold yarns, reading charts, yarn dominance, how to introduce new colors, prevent yarns from tangling, and weave in ends. This class is for those new to stranded knitting and those looking to brush up on their techniques.

Making It Up—The Fair Isle Hat: Begin designing with Fair Isle motifs by starting your own hat. Through Mary Jane’s guidance and lots of individual attention, you’ll experiment will color and pattern to create your own design. You’ll leave class inspired to complete your hat and generate other colorwork projects!

Andean Accents—An Exploration of Decorative Edges: Learn to make both the checkerboard and scalloped edgings used in traditional chullos (Andean earflap hats), as well as “instant” popcorns (bobbles) while knitting a fun pair of wristlets. You many never knit a “plain” edge again!

Fresh Fair Isle—Liven Up Your Knitting: Learn the basics of color theory and how to use its principles to guide color choices while knitting a simple stranded wristlet or fingerless glove during this full-day class. Examine the use of color in traditional Fair Isle knitting and move beyond into developing your own personal color schemes. You’ll also learn to analyze how different color combinations can completely change the look of a motif.

I’ll fill in as the Knit Doctor to help whatever ails your knitting. You can sign up for a free one-on-one consultation when you register and I’ll do my best to send you off with a clear diagnosis and a complete remedy.

I’ll also teach my very popular full-day class on Thursday:

A Skirt for All Seasons—Design a Custom-Fit “Pleated” Skirt

Knitted skirts are becoming wardrobe staples—and they’re a lot easier to knit than you might think (they require just three to four skeins of sock yarn)! Learn how to take proper waist and hip measurements and combine them with your gauge to create a “pleated” skirt with a perfect fit, no matter your size. You’ll leave with a personalized skirt pattern for your yarn and gauge.

Space is limited to 90 participants. Register now to secure your spot!

Knit Stars 3.0 Update

I’ve been scurrying to knit all the necessary step-outs for my upcoming Knit Stars 3.0 segment. It’s all very exciting.

I’ll be teaching how to cut and finish a steek with a zipper or button band. Downloadable instructions are included for knitting two cup cozies — one with a bright zipper and one with a tidy button band. You don’t have to commit too much time to knitting the small pieces before you can practice the fine art of adding closures to steeks! Once you successfully cut your knitting, you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about.

Special yarns have been dyed by my friend Ana Clerc of Yarn Carnival for my cup cozy project. Kits will be available through Loops in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Knit Stars 3.0 will launch in November. Sales are currently closed but you can get your name on the waitlist to ensure your spot when they open again this fall.

Knit Like A Master DVD

Look what arrived in my mailbox! My Craftsy class titled Knit Like A Master is now available as a DVD so you can watch it even when you don’t have internet access.

This, my third Craftsy class, includes everything I think every knitter should know that will fit into the three-hour video workshop format. From knitting and measuring a proper gauge swatch to seaming and weaving in ends, this class shows ways to master your knitting. Tips and tricks along the way will help you bring your knitting to a professional level, whether you’re a beginner or have been knitting for years.

FYI, my first Craftsy class, Save Our Stitches: Fixing Knitting Mistakes, is available on DVD as well. I hope it’s only a matter of time before my second class, Essential Skills for Sock Knitting, makes it’s way to DVD format.

I love the Craftsy platform and think you will, too!

Loops Love

Last weekend found me in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the first-ever Loops Retreat. Loops owner Shelley Brander (far left in the teacher photo below) is a genius at creating community among knitters (and everyone else, I suspect). The teachers were Romi Hill, who taught lace techniques and surgery, Andrea Mowry, who taught brioche and shawls, and Carson Demers, who taught knitting ergonomics. I filled in as the Knit Doctor. As much as I enjoy teaching, I thoroughly enjoyed spending one-on-one time with the attendees!

To ensure that everyone was comfortable, at ease, and fully taken care of, Shelley hired my Knit For Fun Retreats event coordinator Cindy Hallam to manage the weekend. It worked because I only saw smiles from registration on Thursday to the closing brunch on Sunday.

The retreat was held within walking distance of the Loops store, which is a mecca of fine yarns. If you’re in the Tulsa area, it’s worth a trip. If not, you can shop online by clicking on the link above.

A highlight of the event was the special yarn brought in just for the weekend. Dye For Knitting even dyed a special colorway for each of the teachers! “My” colorway, shown at right is called Loops Loves Ann. Wow! I want to design something special with it!

I say it often and it’s worth saying again–knitting retreats are the best way to meet up with other knitters and learn new things!

Oh, Canada!

The wait is over! Registration for my second Knit For Fun Retreat in Edmonton, Canada, is now open. Once again, this Canadian retreat will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton, West Edmonton where warm woolies are welcome most of the year! The event will take place from Thursday, October 25 through brunch on Sunday, October 28.

The regular retreat classes will be scheduled during four class periods: Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. Registration includes three classes, one class with each of the three teachers: ergonomic specialist Carson Demers, prolific knitwear designer Bristol Ivy, and Poland’s star Justyna Lorkowska. Attendees will also get the opportunity to schedule an appointment with the Knit Doctor (that’s me!). Additional classes can be purchased, provided space is available.

Carson will teach

  • Swatch Buckling—Swatching for Improved Posture, Comfort, and Efficiency Bring improved ergonomics to life in your knitting technique by examining yarn-tensioning techniques, all phases of stitch formation from simple to challenging stitches, and ways to add movement to avoid stiffness and injuries caused by disuse.
  • Socks Unraveled—Risks and Remediation for Sock Knitting Making socks should be as comfortable as wearing them. But many sock knitters experience aches and pains while creating their fantastic footwear. Fear not! This class will teach you ergonomic basics for injury prevention and explore risks and remediation for knitting socks. A little knowledge and some simple changes will help make your body happy from head to toe.
  • Knitting Happily Ever After—An Overview of Ergonomics for Knitters In this class, you’ll learn how your knitting technique impacts your efficiency and productivity. A risk-of-injury assessment will show you how knitting contributes to aches and pains throughout your body. More importantly, you’ll learn how to reduce the discomfort. A little knowledge and some simple changes can keep you knitting comfortably and safely ever after.

Bristol will teach

  • Short-Row Techniques—Shaping Made Simple  Short-rows are a handy way to add shaping to your knitting in both conventional and unexpected ways. Use them to turn a heel on a sock, better tailor a garment to your shape, or add unexpected twists and turns to accessories. In this class, you’ll learn the mechanics of short-rows, try out different techniques, and explore when and where to use them.
  • Introduction to Brioche—Find Love in Squishy Fabric Brioche is an easy stitch that creates a lush, drapey, warm fabric. In this class we’ll learn the basic principles of working brioche flat and in the round, increasing and decreasing in pattern, and get started knitting Bristol’s Hey, Little Songbird pattern.
  • Knitting Outside the Box—Bringing Inspiration to Fruition In this class, we’ll talk about different forms of inspiration and different ways of thinking about knitting, then explore methods and theory to bring those ideas to reality. This is a great class if you’re interested in designing or just want to experiment with the vast possibilities knitting has to offer.

Justyna will teachJustyna

  • Shawl Shapes—Explore the Possibilities Shawls are the hottest projects in the knitting world right now. They’re the perfect way to explore new techniques or use just a few skeins of precious yarn for something lovely. We’ll look at how to create triangular to crescent shapes and discuss how to add stitch patterns and how to play with unconventional shaping.
  • Knitted-On Borders—A Perfect Finish They can be simple or intricate, lacy or cabled—your choice—one thing is sure: knitted-on borders give a unique touch to a shawl. This class will focus on how to attach knitted-on borders to a variety of shawl types (and garments!), how to create your own border pattern, and how to determine the amount of yarn you’ll need. You’ll leave this class able to knit your own one-of-a-kind shawl.
  • Color Play—Getting Comfortable with Possibilities Are you afraid to play with colors? Is your yarn stash very colorful and you have no idea of what to cast on? In this workshop, we’ll focus on color play and step out of our comfort zones by learning basic principles of color mixing, finding inspiration, thinking outside the box, and how to translate color preferences into knitting.

I’ll set up shop as the Knit Doctor, offering one-on-one sessions of 20 minutes each on a first-come, first-serve basis (you’ll sign up for a slot when you register). I’ll help you with anything that ails your knitting, from taking measurements and choosing yarn to finding your place in a piece gone wrong to fixing mistakes. With more than 40 years’ knitting experience, I’ve seen (and corrected) almost everything.

For those wanting a bit more, each teacher will offer an optional full-day class the day of registration (Thursday, October 25).

  • Carson Demers will teach an extended version of Knitting Happily Ever After
  • Bristol Ivy will teach an extended version of Brioche Stitch–The Basics and Beyond
  • Justyna Lorkowska will teach Knit to Fit–Take the Guesswork Out of Your Next Garment
  • Ann Budd (that’s me) will teach A Skirt for All Seasons–Design a Custom-Fit “Pleated” Skirt

As for the Canadian Knit For Fun Retreat in 2017, this retreat will be held in partnership with River City Yarns of Edmonton. Owners Barb and Cynthia will spearhead the Canadian-themed marketplace. You’re guaranteed to find lots of fabulous Canadian yarns and notions, many of which are not easily available in the U.S.!

Last year’s Canadian retreat filled in a manner of days. Click here to secure your spot!

On the Road Again

Wednesday I returned from a trip to the Pacific Northwest where I held my Knit For Fun Retreat in Vancouver, Washington, then spent a few days in Vancouver, British Columbia, for the Knit City Fibre Festival. I left with my share of yarn.

Now I’m home long enough to unpack and repack, then I’m heading to Columbus, Ohio, where I’ll teach two days (Tuesday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 18) at 614 Knit Studio.

At 614 Knit Studio I’m scheduled to teach Matching Cast-Ons And Bind-Offs, Intarsia In The Round, Conquering Kitchener Stitch, and Intro To Sweater Design. There may still be a few spots left in each class.  I’d love to meet up with you there!

From Columbus, I head to Hamilton, Ohio, to teach at Lambikin’s Hideaway Friday, October 20 (Reading Your Knitting and Charts), and Saturday, October 21 (Knitting Steeks And Inserting Zippers and Custom Socks At Any Gauge). Call the shop at 513-895-5648 to sign up. Nothing beats a day knitting with friends!

In November, I’ll be in Billings, Montana, because everyone wants to go North in November (wink). Honestly, I’m looking forward to sweater weather. You’ll find me and color expert Jennifer Miller at Off the Needles’ first-ever knitting retreat November 18 and 19. I’ll teach Knitting Steeks And Inserting Zippers, Intro To Sweater Design, Fixing Mistakes, and Custom Socks At Any Gauge. You get two classes with each teacher and a VIP dinner and fashion show.
